What Mons Pubis Liposuction involves
The mons pubis is the soft mound of fat over the pubic bone. In some women — and men — it is prominent from birth; in others it enlarges with weight gain, pregnancy or after a tummy tuck that flattened the abdomen above it and left it looking fuller by comparison. A prominent mons shows through fitted clothing and swimwear and can be a source of real distress that patients find difficult to raise. Liposuction reduces it in a short procedure through two tiny ports, so that the lower abdomen and pubic area form one smooth plane.
The decision that matters is whether the problem is fat or loose skin. A firm, full mons with taut skin responds to liposuction alone. A mons that has dropped — where the skin hangs and the mound sits lower than it should, common after large weight loss — needs a lift with skin removal, sometimes combined with liposuction. The consultation photos decide, and the surgeon will say honestly if a lift is the right operation.
What it does not do: it does not change the pubic bone, it does not tighten hanging skin, and it does not treat the labia (labiaplasty is a separate procedure). It is frequently done alongside a tummy tuck or abdominal liposuction so that the whole lower abdomen is treated as one contour.
Scars: Two 3 mm port sites hidden in the pubic hairline or groin crease
Who it suits — and who it does not
Good candidates
- ✓A prominent pubic mound with firm skin that shows through clothing or swimwear
- ✓A mons that looks fuller after a tummy tuck flattened the abdomen above it
- ✓Stable weight; non-smoker; good general health
- ✓Planning abdominal liposuction or a tummy tuck and wanting the pubic area treated in the same session
- ✓Realistic that the aim is a smooth transition from abdomen to pubic area
Usually advised against
- –A dropped mons with loose, hanging skin — a mons lift is needed
- –Weight still changing
- –Active skin infection or folliculitis in the area until treated
- –Expecting change to the labia or vulva, which is a different procedure
Techniques and options
Tumescent liposuction
Dilute local anaesthetic with adrenaline is infiltrated, then fat is removed with fine 2–3 mm cannulas through two ports hidden in the pubic hairline or groin crease. The mons is treated gently because the tissue is fibrous and sensitive.
Blending with the lower abdomen
The transition from the lower abdomen to the mons is feathered so that there is no step. When done with abdominal liposuction or a tummy tuck, the mons is treated as part of the same contour.
Laser or power assistance
Helps break up the fibrous fat of the mons and, with laser, encourages mild skin tightening. Useful when there is slight laxity.
Compression
A compression garment or firm underwear worn for 3–4 weeks controls swelling in an area that swells readily.
What happens on surgery day
- 1
Assessment before travel: photos of the lower abdomen and pubic area standing, from the front and side, with a description of whether the mound is firm or the skin hangs. The surgeon confirms liposuction alone is appropriate.
- 2
Admission on the morning of the procedure after fasting if general anaesthesia is planned. Blood tests and anaesthetic review. Markings standing up.
- 3
Under sedation or general anaesthesia, tumescent infiltration and liposuction through two ports, feathered into the lower abdomen.
- 4
Ports closed with a stitch or left to drain; compression fitted.
- 5
One night in hospital for comfort, particularly when combined with other procedures.
- 6
Discharge the next morning. Clinic visit at day 2–3 for a check and the fit-to-fly confirmation.
Recovery timeline
Days 1–3
Swelling and bruising of the pubic area, which can be striking because the tissue is loose; soreness like a bruise. Regular painkillers, compression, gentle walking.
Days 3–7
Showers from day 2. Desk work resumes. Swelling can extend into the labia or scrotum — expected and settles.
Weeks 2–4
Bruising fades; firmness as the tissue heals. Compression continues. Light exercise from week 2.
Weeks 4–6
Compression stops. Full exercise. Sexual activity when comfortable, usually from week 3–4.
Months 2–3
Final contour as swelling clears.
Results — and their limits
A flatter pubic area that forms one smooth plane with the lower abdomen, noticeable in fitted clothing and swimwear.
Removed fat cells do not return; remaining fat responds to weight change.
Swelling in this area lasts longer than in most liposuction zones — judge the result at 3 months, not 3 weeks.
If the skin was borderline, mild residual fullness or laxity may remain and a lift can be considered later.
When it is final: Swelling settles over 6–12 weeks
Risks and how they are managed
Every operation carries risk. These are the ones that matter for this procedure, and what is done to reduce, spot or treat each.
Prolonged swelling, including into the labia or scrotum
Expected to some degree; compression and time. Elevating the pelvis when resting helps in the first week.
Bruising
Tumescent technique limits it; it can look dramatic in this area and fades over 2–3 weeks.
Contour irregularity or asymmetry
Gentle technique and feathering; massage and time; small touch-up after 6 months if needed.
Numbness or altered sensation
Common for weeks to months; usually resolves. Sensation of the clitoris and labia is not affected by liposuction of the mons.
Loose skin after fat removal
Correct patient selection; a lift is planned instead when skin hangs.
Infection
Uncommon; antibiotic cover; keep the area clean and dry.
Seroma
Compression; drained with a needle if it forms.

How to compare this with a quote at home
Ask any clinic for the same list: surgeon and anaesthetist fees, hospital nights, tests, medication, garments or splints, follow-up visits. A cheaper headline price usually excludes several of these. Then add your flights and insurance to our price for a like-for-like comparison.
How to prepare
- 1.Send photos of the lower abdomen and pubic area standing, from the front and side, and tell us whether the mound is firm or the skin hangs.
- 2.Hold a stable weight. Stop smoking 4 weeks before; stop aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil and supplements that increase bleeding 14 days before.
- 3.Trim, do not shave, the pubic hair a few days before — shaving raises the risk of folliculitis.
- 4.Bring loose trousers and firm, supportive underwear; arrange 3 nights in Turkey and 2–3 days off desk work.
Aftercare at home
- •Compression garment or firm underwear day and night for 3–4 weeks.
- •Elevate the pelvis on a pillow when resting for the first week to reduce swelling.
- •Showers from day 2; keep the area clean and dry; no baths, pools or sea for 3 weeks.
- •Walk daily; light exercise from week 2; full exercise from week 4. Sexual activity when comfortable, usually from week 3–4.
- •Gentle massage from week 2 as instructed.
- •Report increasing pain, spreading redness, fever or a sudden one-sided swelling. Photos at 2 weeks, 6 weeks and 3 months.
