What Mini Tummy Tuck involves

A mini tummy tuck treats the lower abdomen only: the small pouch of loose skin and fat below the navel that remains after pregnancy or modest weight loss, in a woman whose upper abdomen is flat and whose navel sits well. Through a low incision — often shorter than a caesarean scar, and placed to include an existing caesarean scar — the skin between the incision and the navel is lifted, the lower muscle wall tightened if it has separated, the excess skin removed and the incision closed. The navel is not moved, so there is no scar around it.

It is a smaller operation than a full abdominoplasty with a faster recovery and a shorter scar, and for the right patient it gives an excellent result. The right patient is specific: loose skin confined to below the navel, good skin above, and a muscle separation that is either absent or limited to the lower abdomen. Liposuction of the flanks is often added to define the waist.

What it does not do: it cannot tighten skin above the navel, it cannot correct a full-length muscle separation, and it cannot reposition a navel that has stretched or dropped. Patients with those problems who have a mini tuck end up with a tight lower abdomen and a loose upper one — a worse look than before. The consultation photos, standing and bending forward, decide honestly which operation you need.

Scars: A low horizontal scar shorter than a full tummy tuck, similar to a caesarean scar, hidden by underwear; no scar around the navel

Who it suits — and who it does not

Good candidates

  • A pouch of loose skin and fat below the navel only, with a flat upper abdomen
  • A navel that sits at a good height and is not stretched
  • Muscle separation absent or confined to below the navel
  • Stable weight, BMI under about 30, finished having children
  • Non-smokers with realistic expectations and a wish for a shorter scar and quicker recovery

Usually advised against

  • Loose skin above the navel or across the whole abdomen — a full tummy tuck is needed
  • Full-length muscle separation with a bulge from ribs to pubis
  • A navel that has dropped or stretched
  • Weight still changing or a further pregnancy planned
  • Smokers unwilling to stop for 4 weeks each side

Techniques and options

Mini abdominoplasty

A low horizontal incision, the skin lifted up to the navel, a lower muscle plication if the muscles have separated below the navel, excess skin removed and the incision closed in layers. The navel stays attached and untouched.

Mini tuck with navel float

When there is a little excess skin just above the navel, the navel stalk is detached from the muscle and re-attached 1–2 cm lower so the skin above can be pulled down slightly. It extends the reach of a mini tuck without a navel scar, but lowers the navel, so it is used selectively.

Lower muscle plication

Separated lower rectus muscles are stitched together with permanent sutures from the navel to the pubis. This flattens the lower bulge and improves core support; it is done only when the separation is confined to the lower abdomen.

Liposuction of the flanks

Frequently added so that the waist matches the flattened lower abdomen; done first, through small ports, before the skin is removed.

Drains and closure

Because less tissue is lifted, drains are often avoided or used for 24 hours only. Layered closure with dissolving sutures under moderate tension; a compression garment from theatre.

What happens on surgery day

  1. 1

Assessment before travel: photos standing, bending forward and from the side, plus your weight and pregnancy history and any caesarean scar. The surgeon confirms a mini tuck is appropriate — or tells you a full tuck is needed.

  2. 2

Admission on the morning of surgery after fasting. Blood tests, ECG and anaesthetic review; compression stockings and an anti-clotting injection.

  3. 3

Markings standing up, with the incision placed low enough to sit under your underwear and to include any caesarean scar.

  4. 4

Under general anaesthesia, liposuction of the flanks if planned, then the low incision, lifting of the lower abdominal skin, muscle plication if needed, removal of excess skin and layered closure.

  5. 5

Compression garment fitted in theatre; drains if used. Two nights in hospital for pain relief and observation, walking slightly bent from the first evening.

  6. 6

Discharge to the hotel on day 2. Drain removal if used and wound checks at the clinic; fit-to-fly report before you travel.

Recovery timeline

Days 1–3

Tightness across the lower abdomen, less than a full tummy tuck; regular painkillers. Walk slightly bent, sleep with knees raised.

Days 4–9

Standing straight becomes comfortable. Showers from day 3 with the incision protected. Garment day and night. Fit-to-fly report.

Weeks 2–3

Desk work resumes. Swelling above the scar is normal and fluctuates through the day. No lifting.

Weeks 4–6

Garment continues; walking and gentle stretching. Scar red and slightly raised.

Weeks 6–8

Exercise resumes, core work last. Garment stops at 6 weeks.

Months 3–18

Final contour at 3 months; scar fades over 12–18 months with silicone and sun protection.

Results — and their limits

A flat lower abdomen with the pouch gone, a low scar hidden by underwear and an untouched navel. Combined with flank liposuction, a defined waist.

The result lasts as long as weight stays stable and there are no further pregnancies; removed skin does not return.

Stretch marks below the navel are removed with the skin; those above remain.

If a mini tuck was chosen for the right reasons, the upper abdomen matches; choosing it to avoid a full tuck when the upper abdomen is loose leads to disappointment — which is why the assessment is strict.

When it is final: Swelling settles over 3 months; scar matures over 12–18 months

Risks and how they are managed

Every operation carries risk. These are the ones that matter for this procedure, and what is done to reduce, spot or treat each.

Seroma

Compression garment, drains when used, limiting activity early; drained with a needle if it forms.

Wound-healing problems at the incision

Less than a full tuck because less tissue is lifted; non-smoking, moderate tension, a healthy BMI.

Residual looseness above the navel

Prevented by correct patient selection; if it appears, it means a full tuck was needed and can be done later.

Scar higher or wider than planned

Careful standing markings and closure under moderate tension; silicone from week 3; revision under local anaesthesia after a year if wanted.

Navel distortion (with float)

Used selectively and re-attached carefully; the navel ends slightly lower by design.

Numbness of the lower abdomen

Expected for months; usually resolves.

Bleeding, infection

Stopping blood thinners, antibiotic cover, prompt review of one-sided swelling or redness.

Blood clots

Compression stockings, anti-clotting injections, early walking, no flight before the fit-to-fly check.

How to compare this with a quote at home

Ask any clinic for the same list: surgeon and anaesthetist fees, hospital nights, tests, medication, garments or splints, follow-up visits. A cheaper headline price usually excludes several of these. Then add your flights and insurance to our price for a like-for-like comparison.

How to prepare

  • 1.Send photos standing relaxed, bending forward and from the side, and mention any caesarean scar and whether you have finished having children.
  • 2.Reach a stable weight for 6 months. Stop smoking and nicotine 4 weeks before and after.
  • 3.Stop aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, vitamin E and herbal supplements 14 days before; discuss the pill or HRT.
  • 4.Bring the underwear style you want the scar hidden by, front-fastening tops, and slip-on shoes.
  • 5.Arrange 9 nights in Turkey, 10–14 days off desk work and help with lifting for 2 weeks.

Aftercare at home

  • Walk slightly bent for a few days, then straighten. Sleep with knees raised for 2 weeks.
  • Compression garment day and night for 6 weeks.
  • Showers from day 3 with the incision protected; no baths, pools or sea for 6 weeks.
  • No lifting over 5 kg for 6 weeks; exercise from week 6, core work last.
  • Silicone gel or tape on the scar from week 3 for 3–6 months; sun protection for a year.
  • Report calf pain, breathlessness, fever, spreading redness or one-sided swelling immediately. Photos at 2 weeks, 6 weeks, 3, 6 and 12 months.

Frequently asked questions

Mini or full tummy tuck — how do I know?
Look at your abdomen standing and bending forward. If the loose skin is only below the navel and the upper abdomen is flat, a mini may be enough. If skin is loose above the navel or the whole abdomen bulges from muscle separation, only a full tuck works. Send photos; the surgeon tells you honestly.
Where is the scar and how long is it?
Low on the abdomen, shorter than a full tummy tuck scar and similar to or slightly longer than a caesarean scar, placed to sit under your underwear. There is no scar around the navel.
Does it fix separated muscles?
Only if the separation is below the navel; those muscles are stitched together. A separation running the full length needs a full tummy tuck.
Is recovery easier than a full tummy tuck?
Yes — less tissue is lifted, drains are often avoided, and most patients stand straight within days. Restrictions on lifting and exercise are similar because of the muscle repair and incision.
Will it remove stretch marks?
Those on the skin that is removed below the navel, yes. Those above the navel remain.
What about my caesarean scar?
It is usually removed within the new incision, so you end up with one low scar instead of two.
Can I combine it with liposuction?
Flank liposuction is often included; liposuction of other areas can be added within safe limits.
When can I fly home?
After the wound check and fit-to-fly report, around day 8–9. Nine nights in Turkey are included.
What is included in the price?
Surgeon, tests, the mini tummy tuck with lower muscle repair and flank liposuction where planned, 2 hospital nights, 7 hotel nights, transfers, compression garment, wound checks, fit-to-fly report and 12 months of remote follow-up. Flights and insurance are not included.
