HARRODS

Charles Harrod opened a wholesale grocery store in 1834 and moved to Brompton in 1849, building a shop on the site of the present department store. The shop expanded by buying nearby houses and buildings in the following years.

Harrods was burned to the ground in December of 1883 but was restored on a wider scale soon afterwards. The department store was acquired by Mohamed Al Fayed of Egypt in 1985 and sold in 2010 to Qatar Holdings.

Harry Gordon Selfridge travelled with his wife, Rose, to England on holiday in 1906. Unimpressed with the standard of established British supermarkets, he found that the new selling ideas that were being used in the United States were not embraced by the major stores in London. And then, Selfridge decided to build its own building to invest £400,000.

You can walk around Selfridges, the second largest shopping centre in London after Harrods, even without shopping.

HAMLEYS

This multi-storey shop on Regent Street is one of Europe’s most famous toy stores. Hamleys does not have original products that will attract much attention, but it can be an enjoyable travel and shopping point especially for families with children.

For adults, the sections of Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter etc. themed products may be interesting.
